Our History

Established in 1945, the Dutchess County Soil and Water Conservation District has been working with individuals for over 60 years.

Authorized by State Statute, the District is an organization set up to coordinate State and Federal conservation programs at the local level.

The District is directed by a seven member Board of Directors and hires technical and administrative staff to oversee day-to-day operations.

What is a Conservation District?

A Conservation District focuses on natural resource problems and solutions.  The District provides technical assistance as well as education on soil, water and related natural resources.  Municipalities, farmers and landowners use this information in making proper land use decisions.  In addition, the District assists other environmental organizations in the expansion of public service.

Below is a list of some of the Technical Assistance that we offer

  • Agriculture Environmental Management (AEM)
  • Coming soon - Community Environmental Management (CEM)
  • DEC permit filing
  • Dry hydrant (fire protection)
  • Nonpoint source pollution control
  • Nutrient management plans
  • Pond, stream and wetland management
  • Soil interpretation
  • Stormwater management
  • Sustainable agriculture
  • Whole Farm Plans
  • Watershed management
